To be clear, this is not an accurate representation of grad school programs. I have a Masters in Chemistry. My classes were half male and half female, and I got my degree slightly before this book was released (BA 20+ yrs prior). There was no stigma. I understand this is a work of fiction, but if you're going to make academia sound like it's still in the 50s, write the book in the 50s. Don't set it up as modern day.
