Seems exposure to radium was the basis for the eventual creation of OSHA. (Though 1971 was a looong time after the mid 1920s.)

The way the story is written is conflicting for me. While I feel it has an agenda, I’m also outraged at how the radium girls were marginalized or dismissed. And the story has some personal connection since I lived in Marseilles, near Ottawa, IL, around 1980, not long after Luminous Processes closed down. I still remember the fenced off building downtown.
