i think booktok is ruining literature and it isn’t.
more people are reading, and it’s helping publishers
however, some authors are kicked to the curb for not meeting the standards, books are filled with tropes, and every popular book feels almost exactly the same as the other
people are skipping long paragraphs, only reading dialogue, someone said asking for no repetitive words

hii! i totally agree. out of curiosity, how is asking for no repetitive words ableist? (i’m trying to learn more)
@coconut - in my perspective as someone who’s neurodivergent, repetition helps me keep track with the plot or characters. so when neuro typical people claim that repetition is “boring” or prose in general shouldn’t be repeated it sounds tone deaf in the sense that people who do have to rely on the repeating sentences are dumb??? idk that’s my two cents lmaoo
coconut reads ok so im kinda 50/50 ab it. like @lena said, I understand how easy words and repetition can be easier. however, someone posted smth asking to bring back hard words in fantasy bc sometimes a story requires that, and someone calls it ableist. i think that wanting harder reads isnt problematic, but I think that complaining ab easier reads isnt
I 100% agree. There’s a difference between reading books and reading literature in my opinion. We’re all reading, but objectively, most modern books are lacking in quality and intellectualism. And that’s just a fact, not meant to slander anyone who primarily reads let’s say romantasy. Books are no longer art, they’re just a means of cheap entertainment now, in my eyes. Appealing to the masses instead of taking time to craft a meaningful story
peak discussion. i agree 100% the "tropesick" book is literally this but hidden in plain sight. if regular books had a list of tropes on the back (which, some already do), ppl would either love it or hate it. it's the same thing as "fast fashion". authors are no longer writing books to educate, just to entertain and not actually taking the time to write a meaningful story. ie. tessa bailey, colleen hoover, elle kennedy, rachel reid. and so many more.
yk true reading is dying out when instead of actually describing the plot and depth of fantasy or fiction story, people just list the romance tropes, and unless there’s a hot mc and sexy romance storyline, the book doesn’t get popular
emily marie well I think every book IS literature, i js think most books back then were made for you to think while now most authors are pressured into writing smth that follows trends
jay YES like ik the book is ab authors so that’s why it’s called “tropesick” but it feels like authors are playing a game called “how many tropes can we fit into a book”
siera yes like wdym the author who has been working on smth that’s been on her mind for a while, js for an unoriginal enemies to lovers with another cliche knife to the throat scene gets TONS of attention
also people refusing to read books because they cannot imagine themselves at the fmc ive seen a white woman complain about the lack brunette characters and their "representation" in books. and because of the lack of "representation" she cannot imagine herself as the fmc. first of all, why are we imaging ourselves as the fmc in the first place. second of all, "representation for brunette characters" baby you're white almost every other main character is white. the people who truly deserve representation are poc.
facts😪 i blame it all on capitalism the way stories in books are becoming more repetitive just to sell to specific groups. i yearn for humans to go back to writing books just for the sake of writing a book and not forcing and bending it to fit to thoes standards
maryam yes no one cares if a book makes you upset bc theu arent white there are TONS of other books. also, I’ve never even seen a book with a thai fmc written in english for more accessibility or even in the US so no, there still isn’t enough representation yes some author’s stories need to be told and then editors charge a ton or dont accept it bc it doesn’t fit in w other booktok books
SERIOUSLY if you can’t write without ai dont write at all
monika fr books is becoming another overconsumption product where it’s made w mass production and in the end made to be watched instead. i want something i’ve never read before, not the same recycled knife to the throat
I think a lot of issues would be solved if everyone collectively stopped buying tropey books & actually supported up and coming SFF (& other genre fiction) authors that are way less known. Even this month, there's some amazing releases that will get 0 attention mainstream because of a lack of romance or because they don't all contain a white cishet able bodied protagonist. Also, support indie authors!! I know most of indie is trash but asking for recommendations and going off that usually works. Publishers won't care until they stop making money. There's no space online dedicated to promoting new SFF (& other genre fiction) either. You gotta rawdog it. r/Fantasy on Reddit is one of the biggest (probably the biggest) fantasy community online and while it's decent, they keep whining about romantasy domination while only promoting old books.
publishing is turning into the new fast fashion market with recycled ideas. im sick of love triangles and fake dating normally i would say “is this really what straight people like” but fake dating is infecting queer lit too. worst trope tbh
literally i remember last year i met a girl that skim read anything that wasn't dialogue and i yelled at her for a VERY long time and gave her a talking to on why she SHOULDN'T and how you're not actually reading the book if you only read the dialogue, and... she has officially converted to the good side because of me yayyyy!!!! One soul saved out of millions..
the bit i really don’t support is the ai bit, like come on do you really want to read something a machine wrote?! and how do people not get bored of the same repetitive plots over and over again because let’s be honest booktok is mostly the same type of books 😪
dreamcatcher yes like if ppl would js stop promoting problematic authors or js books that are unoriginal in general then more indie authors could get more attention
arya fr how do you genuinely support someone who says smth generated by smth that wastes water is their own work

while more people are reading, stop paying attention to controversial, problematic authors who support ai who are working against other artists and support the people wishing to work in a role which makes them happy and be able to share their story
