Nathaniel This is the most accessible text on ML theory that I've read to date. Every concept is expressed geometrically, which is helpful. I'd also recommend "Introduction to Machine Learning with Python" if you're interested in learning libs like scikit-learn, and "Data Science for Business" if you're interested in a language agnostic, high-level overview.

Full disclosure: I took an in-person course taught by the author. The book is still the best I've come across; however, I did have several "aha!" moments in the course that I wouldn't necessarily have had just reading the book.

Also, this is still very much a math textbook, so I wouldn't pick it up expecting a novel or anything. See "Data Science for Business" for a readable overview that is light on the maths.
