Certainly Murdoch’s greatest attempt (in frequency, length, and impact) at so-called ‘literary’ prose. Some of the phrases seem inspired by Faulkner at times. And she does a good job for the most part, though it does seem more so because of her astounding intelligence than her natural inclination for this type of writing. Especially since it is ten times more prevalent here than any other work of hers I know.
