This story "The trouble of Dr. Thoss" There’s something deeply wrong about it.
It reads like a basic story with an unimaginative ending and a generic monster, yet leaves you feeling something is amiss. As if the plot didn’t generate the horror, but the horror generated a basic plot, without ever alluding to what the horror actually is.
It’s incredibly subtle. Never read something quite like it, impressive.

These are more thought provoking than spooky. The atmosphere is not as intense as I was hoping, either. I hope the first story wasn't just a hook and that it isn't all downhill from there. Although I do like thinking deeply more than being spooked, if I'm only going to think deeply, there are more thought provoking reads out there.

This guy Ligotti can really prose. The first story in this collection had me bent over the pages. I knew what was coming from a kilometer away, but I stayed anyway because I felt like I was there, in the house.
I've had more than enough of those fucking otherworldly cities after Chambers, Poe, and Lovecraft, though. But what am I to do about it... I like the stories in this anthology.
