I hate, in single-parent stories, where a kid either adopts a pet behind their parent's back or does something else behind their back and the love interest agrees to keep their secret. WHY. Just WHY. Talk to the other parent, for fuck's sake. Especially when they already hate you. Be a fucking adult, and not the kids' best friend when they're like 10 or so.
