realized that one of the parts that make Remarque's writing so enjoyable are the humanity of his female characters - in this case Elisabeth went on a kinda first date - talked shit about political climate, drank liqueur with him on a random bench by the barracks, said lets stop talking so they sat in silence and both fell asleep, woke up and cried on the way home, secured a second date and kissed him goodnight. 10/10
