Lin Xiangfu is dead. I didn’t expect this to happen as he has been the moral compass of the story and it feels as though now that he’s dead the story will turn somewhere more graphic and unsettling. I’m not sure at the moment if Chen Yongliang will avenge his murder. Gu Yumin is saved after torture but I don’t think he knows yet his son has been sold to slavery for Australia.

The descriptions of war and sexual violence are so graphic and uncomfortable to read. These scenes really show the horror of war, and the capability of some people to engage in such heinous acts. The behaviour of the bandits doesn’t seem exaggerated to prove a point, it’s raw, bloody and unapologetic - it also feels soulless. This has been a hard few chapters to read
