We were always there for the end of June, my favorite time of year, when the sun doesn’t set until 9:30 at night and you feel as if you will live forever. On July 4th, there were fireworks at the beach and we would pack a picnic, dig a hole in the sand, build a fire, sings songs — in short experience a night when we felt like a conventional American family.

I adored the chapter on her journalism love story. And I’m delighted to find she knew a Navasky who was a newspaper editor. I hope this is where the character Frank Navasky (You’ve Got Mail) came from!
