I feel like my interest is kind of plateauing. It’s not that there’s been a decline in intrigue or even a real shift in storytelling. The plot has remained the same since the beginning, so I might be bored. Trying to finish it out.

I’m wondering if the organization of this book is a little too scattered. It’s not badly written at all…I just feel like there are probably less confusing approaches to achieve the same effect. There isn’t a singular identifiable linear tracing between any of the subjects and some chapters are barely a page long. I’ve read most of this book today, but feel like I’m likely losing track of details.

I’m realizing this is more of the authors story that I thought it would be…but I’m not mad about it. It’s descriptive in ways I find surprising. The most subtle descriptive details convey more and more informative illustration. Stylistically, this author is certainly rough around the edges and feels so genuine in struggling through his explaining, but I enjoy the seemingly effortless immersive effect he has.

I didn’t expect it, but this book goes way beyond the recapping of an infamous crime junkie attraction. It’s a framing of endless social and cultural phenomena that are rightfully included as complicit in the atrocities they orchestrate. There is a subconscious, yet justified, alerting of just how wide and deep the brokenness of a community runs, putting into perspective just how small a piece of the puzzle is.

I find it interesting, the choice to include a section about the author’s own demons. It startles the narrative into a more uncomfortable reality that it’s not just words on a page, rumors from the headlines, or something that only happens to other people…it’s you and me.
