Also Juliette is not a very likeable character, her continuous criticism of everyone around her as if she’s god’s given gift. Her harsh exterior would make more sense if we saw more of her relationship with her father and building on her responsibility as an heir but since we don’t see that she comes off incredibly arrogant. Roma is no better he’s just dull and boring.

I’m finding it so hard to care about these characters 😭 I’m enjoying the family dynamics and friendships rather than the main romantic sub plot I just think there hasn’t been enough opportunity to build any tension so when they finally did kiss Idgaf 😔

Still think the plot is quite a slow pace but you can tell it’s intentional to build relationships and world build but I do wish it was a bit more intense 😭 I’m finding it hard to connect to these characters like I usually do but I’ll see if that changes towards the end

The first 100 pages were very back and forth about the same points in the plot and not very engaging. The only thing I enjoyed was the factual content of the opium wars and the political divisions in Shanghai during the 1920s.
Right now there’s finally some development in the plot with murder/angst and tension so hopefully now it gets better.
