I almost want to say I'm grateful my parents aren't like Emil, but, in some ways, they are...While they never shied away from their culture after immigrating here, they never taught me the language and our country's history following the same line of reasoning that I'm Fil-Am, "more American", so what happens there doesn't affect me or shouldn't matter to me. So I'm here now learning on my own like Chris.

although, to give them the benefit of the doubt, they did try to teach me Tagalog, but I struggled to learn English in elementary school so my teacher advised them to only speak in English at home. I guess after years passed, they gave up on teaching me Tagalog, but I'll never understand why they couldn't try again once I got a hold of English. Just another form of assimilation to the American culture.
