Although upright, Australopithecus are rather different from modern humans. Their body hair is still long, with loss of hair thought to be associated with humans’ later adaptation to long-distance running. Their faces are still very ape-like, with jaws that project forwards, and a sloping forehead tapering the head behind strong brows, to thick necks.

Ali Di Plato asks whether the identity of the original ship is retained by the preservation piece, or whether, having been entirely replaced, it can be thought of as the same ship at all.

An extension to this experiment supposes that the removed timbers are treated, the rot removed, and the ship is later rebuilt using the original material.

Which of the ships is the same as the original, or do they both inherit the identity of the original Ship of Theseus?
