1919 may be the most fertile year to set your novel. Power move. Featuring the odd news clipping or piece of ad copy, this reminds me of the first of Dos Passos's U.S.A. books. I feel this is a more subtly rendered story than The Singapore Grip - no mean feat. JGF loves himself a caricature. Here, the cartoonish corners inhabited by the principals quickly turn into something more thought-provoking.
