I had no idea! Embarrassed to admit that 1) though I took every African American lit class I could in college, this was never assigned in any of those courses, 2) I have never studied it formally or used it with my students, and 3) read it once, around 2015, but passively, and certainly did not extract the juice out of it like I am this time! I live maybe 45 minutes from Eatonville and am loving all of the local references and am reading this to determine whether I will use it - or excerpts of it - for teaching this year. The dialect is going to be a challenge for some of my students - how do yours fare? Would love to know more about your approach to it!
