Hugo’s humor in this book is VASTLY underrated. Having the narrator repeatedly call Phœbus out for being an idiot will never not be funny, especially when he calls Esmeralda “my love”, “my beauty”, charming damsel” all right in front of his betrothed. Which, speaking of Fleur-de-Lys, even though she is a cruel, jealous woman, I can’t help but feel sorry for her. She’s stuck with Phœbus after all
