Day 4 Story 7 EATING SAGE
No sooner had the sage bush been chopped and fallen to the ground than the reason for the deaths of the two lovers became apparent. Underneath it there was a toad of extraordinary size whose venomous breath must have made the plant poisonous. Since no one dared to get any closer to the toad, they surrounded it with a huge palisade of firewood and burned it up together with the bush.

The wife of a doctor assumes that a lover of hers is dead and puts him in a chest, which two usurers carry off to their house with the man still inside. When he comes to, he is arrested as a thief, but the lady's maid tells the Signoria that she was the one who stuck him in the chest, thus enabling the lover to escape the gallows, while the moneylenders are condemned to pay a fine for having taken the chest.

"What you ate," said the knight to her, “was actually the heart of Messer Guiglielmo Guardastagno, whom you, like the faithless woman you are, were so infatuated with. And you may rest assured that it really was his, because I ripped it out of his chest myself, with these hands, just a little while before I came back here."

Girolamo loves Salvestra, but yielding to his mother’s prayers, he goes to Paris, and when he returns, he finds that Salvestra has gotten married. After sneaking into her house, he lies down at her side and dies. His body is borne to a church, where she, too, dies at his side.

After Andreuola, who is in love with Gabriotto, tells him about a dream she had, he tells her about one of his and then, suddenly, dies in her arms.
Gabriotto heaved a great sigh, clutched her to him, and said, "Oh no, my soul, help me. I'm dying."
Stricken, Andreuola and her maid enter a convent renowned for its sanctity and, as nuns, live out long and virtuous lives.

She retrieves his head and buries it in a flower pot that she mourns over every day. But sadly the brothers steal away the pot too.
