Love these books, so I'm doing a reread, but I have to point out the historical- if not inaccuracy at least improbability of the heroine being 5 ft. 4 in. and thinking herself "hardly substantial." The average Italian woman in 1880 was 5 ft. and even though the heroine is Northern Italian: they're usually taller, no woman in 1880 would have thought herself petite at 5 ft. 4 in. That is the average height today.
