Obviously, I'm not great at choosing light, cheery summer reading!

Christ, this is just so sadly oppressive.

Is Corinne a selfish bastard and terrible parent, or am I entirely off-base?

Yikes. Aren't there like a dozen books in this series? I hope I'm not in for another ~300 pages like this in just this first book.

message 1: by Berengaria (new)

Berengaria Nope, this is a tale of abuse. Read it way back in the..80s? Can't remember a lot about it, but what did make a lasting impression were the, ah-hem, "powdered donuts". Watch out for the powdered donuts!!!!!!

Chris @Berengaria: your timing is eerie - the powdered donuts just occurred. And you're absolutely right - the abuse is shocking, the moralizing is stunning, and the selfish, entitled neglect is unbelievable. This has had me thinking back to The Cement Garden again. I wonder if Ian McEwan read Flowers in the Attic.

message 3: by Jaimie (new) - added it

Jaimie Rogers This series is one of my favorites!!!
I know there's new books added to the series but the author herself only wrote 5 so I would stop after that . I don't believe she ever intended for there to be more.
The last book is the grandmother's story which 😳
Amazing series! Especially for when it was written

Chris @Jaimie: I might just skip to the last book after this one then! 😂 Thank you for the series information and the recommendation!
