I'm nearly 100 pages into this and I have only a basic understanding of what is happening. There is very little punctuation and most of the prose consists of small, choppy dialog full of references I don't understand.

I feel like I'm missing something. The writing style is confusing. I'm 50 pages into this and I haven't seen a question mark once, and speech that should be questions are "Mother said". Whyyyyyy?
