Such a late entry point for the Scudder series Valerie! I think the regular cast of characters was pretty much locked in at this point but probably there is little told of their backstories. Hopefully it still works for you. I did a mini-Scudder re-read binge a few years ago, but didn't quite finish it. I will probably circle back once I finish my current Christie binge.

Agreed, Alan, it is deep into the series with #14 and usually I'm a stickler for starting any new-to-me series with installment #1 however,
"Mathew Scudder is finally leading a comfortable life. He's sober, he's married, and the state (NY) just gave him a private investigator's license. He's growing older (😏along with the rest of us), and he's even getting respectable."

Seems like Matt Scudder is on the threshold of a new lease on life in this installment. Stepping over that threshold with him and the accompanying cast of characters seems like a welcoming, if not ideal, place to start in spite of (or maybe because of) the fact that EVERYBODY DIES 😬[not to mention that it's the only Matt Scudder mystery/thriller already sitting on my
bookshelf 📕ദ്ദി(˃ ᵕ ˂ ).]

If I'm hooked by this installment then I'll definitely backtrack and start with #1 sooner rather than later. When you get around to circling back to your Scudder reread we may be reading an installment or two at the same time 😀👍...... and, in all probability, the stars will align on a few✨🧚‍♀️🙋🏼.
