Picking this back up again after a long break. Edward II is dreadfully boring, but I’ll try to persevere.
And I realised that in my last note on here I said Gaveston side-lined Isabella at her wedding when I actually meant her and Edward’s coronation, as their wedding happened in France. But guess what, turns out you can neither edit nor delete these notes? So I have to issue a correction this way.

Could the man with whom Edward II was ‘extravagantly obsessed’; who was left in charge of England when Edward was away; who side-lined Queen Isabella at her own wedding to Edward in a blatant display… could this man have been Edward II’s lover, as their contemporaries said? Dan Jones, hilariously, has some doubts.

Plantagenet kings apparently all had issues with taxation, in two flavours:
a) taxing the Church (at that time Catholic) was technically not allowed despite the church being extremely rich
b) taxing the rest of the country to fund endless wars made the barons resentful of both the king and the church, the latter for being exempt
It really puts future phenomena like Henry VIII in perspective.

Very interesting also that Edward owed his victory over de Montfort partly to spies, one of whom is described by a chronicler as a woman ‘cross-dressing’ as a man and using the name Margoth. Something very Shakespearean about this.

Absolutely hilarious (for me but surely not for any of those involved) that whenever the king or his forces defeated an enemy and cut off his head, rumours about said enemy’s grave granting miracles started literally the next day. In this case Simon de Montfort’s, defeated and humiliated by the future Edward I.

Fun facts! Fun for me, that is:
a) Henry III and Richard II were similar: both were crowned as children, both had powerful rivals within their families & both became obsessed with Edward the Confessor as a metaphor for the divinity of kingship
b) Henry III was the originator^ and brought the name Edward back into fashion
c) medieval Europeans were very credulous, buying all sorts of fake ‘holy relics’
