Rushdie is incredibly clever. The issue is that he is cognisant of this to a really annoying degree.
He tries to do this thing where he tries to spin a symbol, a motif and analysis and commentary all into one poor object (the perforated sheet. The nose. Snakes and ladders. Saleem’s birth.) it is cute and funny and endearing the first 2-3 times lekin then it gets tiring when he keeps beating the same dead horse
