Even though, the twins have no religious knowledge, they are sent to Auschwitz and targeted by Dr. Josef Mengele solely because of their ethnic Jewish ancestry and their status as identical twins. To the Nazi regime, being Jewish was strictly a matter of race and genetics, not religious observance.
