one of the most gut-wrenching feelings is watching someone you feel close to start doing things entirely alien to you, but it never seems *that* out of character for them. you know what’s going to happen, you know they’re making compromises that will turn them into someone you can’t love, but they don’t care. and they’re shocked when you don’t follow them.

what i love about nick medina’s horror is that he seamlessly blends societal and supernatural monsters, so you’re never sure what the immediate threat is. these characters are all suffering from severe mental health concerns, but their priorities are based on what they see: they see mysterious deaths and disappearances.

medina’s characters develop through how they perceive each other—meaning everyone is beautifully mysterious, inconsistent, and real. i’m able to make connections the characters can’t from their positions, and there’s so much they see amongst themselves that i still don’t know.
