Nao is experiencing a plethora of emotions as her family handles financial struggles and she personally experiences a mismatch in identity between being raised in the USA, and her suicidal psychologically challenged father losing his job, forcing them both to emigrate back to Japan!
I can deeply relate to the feeling of lost belonging, in which she explores by describing herself as a ronin - a warrior with no leader

This was a fascinating last chapter. The founder of the diary evaluates how the odds are defied by her finding this diary on a beach and the fact it didn’t get swamped up by the Great Western Garbage Patch. We learn the lesson that everything is interlinked with everything else through the fabric of time. She contemplates her lost time writing novels of her own when she believed she should be focusing on herself!

I found the opening fascinating. The writing style feels very personal to Nao. She talks about finding a French book with no contents, and how she wants to leave something worth while before she gives up on life, but doesn’t want to go on about her depressing life. She fears her aunts (Jiku’s death)
