Fabulous. Of the 8 private eye novels I picked for this month, The Doomsters, not surprisingly, may end up being my favourite. I did give A Country of Old Men 5 stars, and it deserves it, but that was a final book in a series, and even though the whodunit was strong, a lot of what boosted that book was Hansen knowing how to close out Brandstetter’s arc. Doomsters can’t rely on that.

My 8th and final novel for the Private Eye July reading event (thanks to Jim of Mystery and Mayhem for creating it). Lots of rewarding PI fiction went through me this month, and with this one left, and some Hammett stories, I expect to see the month end strong. I have left myself almost no gumshoe fiction, except for a book of short stories called Jim Hanvey, Detective, but I will start stocking up again soon...
