Reading in preparation for seeing Tchaikovsky’s Onegin at the Santa Fe Opera House. This passionate and heart wrenching melodrama must translate splendidly, no? Poor Tatyana, I liked your letter.

Day 3: Chapters 5 and 6 done. I am floating. The complimentary and contradictory nature of these two chapters is exceptional. 5 is a fantastical and surrealist expression of inner turmoil. 6 is a dark and systematic representation of man's, and society's, inclination towards self-annihilation. The poetry, and translation, is stupendous. A high point in my reading life this year.

Just chapter one tonight. Already moved by the Pushkin Stanza style. Read very easily, almost musically. I see despair coming, and I’m excited.
