The “translation” is based on secondary translations from Sanskrit to Hindi, which means it’s inescapably bastardized from the 11th century Sanskrit (which is also a bastardized version of what the “original stories” were in 1,000 BCE).

But regardless of the “telephone game” origins, it is an excellent collection of moral tales. Extremely depressing (I could only stomach 1-2 a day), but fascinating.
