Watts has done some powerful work with the protagonist by pushing Vera Lewis to her limits and outside her comfort zone. Marcel remains her patient but has become an obsession, though his connection to poetry. As Vera delves deeper into the world of poetic expression, she finds a therapeutic release, both for herself and Marcel. However, one might find the analysis of the latter's iambic pentameter to be too much!

The deeper Vera finds herself in poetry, the harder it is for her to separate herself from its luring abilities. As Marcel begins to push away, he leaves a poignant journal for Vera to read, as well as a few parting notes. Now, all Vera has are the memories and a few threads of past poems to keep her increasingly shaky life in some semblance of order.

As Vera continues her obsession with poetry, she comes to realise that it is Marcel who is leading her, rather than the other way around, in this therapist/client relationship. Furthermore, Vera tackles some of the personal issues that plague her marriage, leading her to take a leap outside her usual zone of comfort, developing a persona on which she can fall back.

Vera is an established therapist in the DC area. Struggling to present herself as still relevant to a job-driven husband, she turns to her patients to offer stimulation. One in particular, Marcel, has been trying to define himself in the outside world, but turns to poetry to express his inner angst. Enter Vera's fascination with this therapeutic medium, allowing her to discover an inner self not yet tapped.
