This is more about what consciousness is not, and about how difficult it is to capture what it is. Pollen admits this in the beginning. As such it’s not very inspiring so far. Art, poetry, spiritual writing, inspirational writing are all more inspiring. But it is kind of fun to plod along with Pollen saying “not this, not this”.

Thank god in the chapter on thought Pollen stops wasting time with the theorists and instead hangs out with a novelist or two who have the vision and the honesty to describe something that cannot be described. “As soon as the soul speaks it is no longer the soul speaking”. Oh but the psychologist and researcher Hadjiilieva does seem to be into something that resonates with me, what they say…

So far he finds almost nothing in his search into traditional scientific knowledge of consciousness, although the chapter I’m in now on “thought” and William James’ work seems to be on a more fruitful path. But the first part: the research is arid and dry and cold and unfeeling (though it is on trying to define “feeling”!) and lacking in empathy.
