I don't know why I was so negative before, I guess it just took some getting used to. This book is (so far) very well written and so is Addy. I like the subtle building of Addy and Ester's relationship.

The constant use of improper grammer is so annoying. I understand that they didn't go to school, but it makes the book hard to read. Same with describing them as dark. I've read a bunch of AG books, and they rarely ever describe characters as "pale" or something unless they are malnourished, like Ana from the Rebecca Rubin books. I guess it's supposed to show that Addy sees black people as the outliers, despite being
