I chose this books because I'd heard great things but didn't know what it was about. I'm halfway through and stunned. I read a lot of novels by writers of color that deal with race and otherness, and the way this one deals with blackness in the US is so nuanced, layered and revealing I can't put the book down. I could not be privy to this perspective without this novel. That's the power of reading.
