15 years has passed in this book and so far nothing and everything has happened. I’m severely unimpressed so far.

Nate Lanning The relationships between the characters and how they grow/change over time as well as Steinbeck's incredible descriptions of life in the Salinas valley are what makes this book good. Seemingly unimportant asides are important for setting up what motivates the characters and what makes them act the way they do.

Don't expect a plot driven book, its character driven and theme driven more than anything else. That doesn't mean there isn't a plot but it's not the hunger games or any other genre fiction book where the destination is the most important part. It's about the journey.
