The Julia-Isolde relationship and its parallels to the Mr. Saladin-Victoria relationship are freaking me out so much. I can't tell if the age gap (between Julia and Isolde) is intentionally weird or not? I mean, Julia is 18 and Isolde is 16-ish, so that's illegal, but I can't tell if Catton wants it to seem predatory or not. The whole "to seduce is to persuade" part made me super uncomfortable.
