Should we use this thread to discuss Judge Stone?

My really loving the audio version of this book. Viola Davis does an awesome job. If you haven’t read/listened to her memoir; I highly recommend it! She narrates the audio of that as well and it’s so raw and emotional.


Chapters 1-29—-

(view spoiler)[ Sorry, I flew through the beginning of this book. Im really enjoying it. I really like the Mary Stone character. I am pro-life and didn’t know this was a book centered around abortion. So far I think it’s well done. My heart breaks for a 13 year old in this situation. Especially one who doesn’t have the support of her mother. What is wrong with that woman?!?! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 30-49

(view spoiler)[ I am wondering what really happened to this young 13 year old girl….I think it has to be more than her sleeping around or even being taken advantage of at a party. Im wondering if it was a teacher or some other adult man in the community. As someone who is pro-life, I didn’t like pro-lifers being used in the same sentence as white supremacists. I don’t think it is fair to generalize anyone based on their beliefs.
Im interested to see where the story will continue…. How will Judge Stone handle the case but also all of the backlash? Was the woman (can’t remember her name right now) murdered in the tree? Was it because she brought the girl for the abortion? Lots of loose ends…. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 50- book completion

(view spoiler)[ I have very mixed feelings on this book….

I was surprised that Nova Jones was raped by some young boys. I really thought that was going in another direction. I feel that it was foreshadowing something much darker. Not to say that what she experienced wasn’t horrific but I didn’t think it followed the feeling I was getting from the story. Also, the rapist in the court room? Especially after Judge Stone asked for everyone to leave. I don’t think that part flowed well.

I feel that the murder of Cocheta was not developed enough. Was it racial or because of the abortion? I think her character could have been better developed. And that her murder felt a bit rushed. Also, the K mark? I don’t think that part was developed enough.

I was surprised that the fire at the farm was on the cover of the book. I thought that was a huge plot point but unfortunately fell flat.

That sounds like a lot of negative comments…but I really like Viola Davis’s narration and Mary Stone’s character. If the book was made into a series following her character, I would definitely want to read more. Overall, I am rating it 3⭐️ (hide spoiler)]
