Genuinely terrible writing. Brown is trying to write this as a sociological authority but lacks the precision and argumentative structure that you'd expect from any professional researcher or essayist. Her arguments are so sparse and poorly defined that she'll spend 20 pages repeating herself (as well as contradicting herself) or going on tangents to fill the space. I often have no idea what her point is.
