Ellsburg has had enough and has decided to betray his friend and employer but serve his country and truthfulness by stealing and releasing the Vietnam reports. He first went to a couple of different senators, but they wouldn’t reveal it due to political backlash. So Ellsburg turned to a friend at the NY Times. Even that friend betrayed Ellsburg’s trust by making his own copies of the reports, unbeknownst to Dan.

The Times got the papers out. The courts stopped them, so Ellsburg went to the Washington Post. The courts stopped them. Ellsburg went to the next newspaper, then the next, then the next. The White House gave up the chase. Ellsburg went from hiding yo surrendering. He was a hero in the eyes of the anti war and anti government population.

Ellsberg moved back to the states. Johnson didn’t seek reelection. Nixon got busted interfering with peace talks to benefit his campaign but Johnson kept it hush to not embarrass the country. Nixon won the presidency. Ellsberg is now working with Kissinger under Nixon.

Big turn of events. Ellsburg got caught snooping and was “demoted”. He didn’t like his new position son” he headed to Vietnam, where he experienced what was really going on versus reading about it in cables. He also proposed then later broke up with Marx. He struggles with the inhumanity of war versus the necessity of fighting communism.

Right away the book captured my attention, with the introduction of Hunt and Liddy. I recognized their names from the HBO series White House Plumbers. I have learned a lot of interesting history already from this book, like how Vietnam was an Allie during World War II but then Ho Chi Minh and his communist ambitions became the enemy. I also did not realize Indochina was a French colony.
