You take something ordinary and something fantastical. Bundle up past, present and future, and mix it all together with a generous amount of metaphors and symbolism. The strange story of a nameless narrator, and the persons he comes across, is classic Murakami to the last word. As always there’s a lot of loose ends, but I loved it nonetheless. A meticulous story about paint and beholding.
