It’s starting to look like Operation: Buy 7 more Saramago Books Because You Loved DEATH WITH INTERRUPTIONS So Much was a success.

I’m finally rounding out who I’ve decided are my favorite authors, 42 books into my reading journey: Percival Everett is #1, followed by a Mt Rushmore of honorable mentions: Joyce Carol Oates, Geraldine Brooks, Graham Greene, and now, for sure, José Saramago, without a doubt.

Saramago’s writing isnt a stream of consciousness — theres no explicit interiority here — and it’s probably trite to compare this kind of writing to Jazz.

Really, it’s like watching someone juggle machetes and dance a two-step while they surf a 30-foot wave, barrel it out, land on shore, and keep on line dancing down the beach. It’s a delightful, thrilling, knotty smattering of smart, self-assured prose.
