I wasn't expecting to cry, and with so few pages into the book.
The book portrays trauma in such a heart breaking and realistic way. The writer is so good at developing characters in a very realistic way in response to traumatic events they experience. The dynamics and relationships have so many layers and have personalities molded by traumatic events in each different time line.
