I’m gonna give it one more chapter cause it has a promising premise - southern gothic, witches, vampires, a creepy mansion. But if the rest of the book is written in the same manner, I do think I’m going to have to abandon it.

Some of the most cringeworthy dialogue and inner monologue - the “dragon in her stomach”, the swinging from the use of unnecessarily complicated words to lines that made me physically cringe. It was like the author had sat flipping through a thesaurus and went “yep, that one’ll do.”

And I’ve read some books with not brilliant writing but an engaging main character and plot, and this isn’t doing it.

The intro reminded me of the start of twilight - “I’d never given much thought to how I would die”, etc, etc.

Started out promising, but the whiplash from her begging for work and then feeling her mother burn to death, to her being sat in a restaurant ogling men like they were in a fish market was intense.
