I have not liked any of the later Roth I have read, but this is appealing. it is not great, but it is a moving and deeply personal novel set in a moment of war (WW2) and epidemic (polio). It feels pretty darn relevant, except that people were very different then, with a sense of duty and honor that is now gone.

I will just sit in my corner with my Roth and whatever strikes my fancy next. There are a few books on this year's Booker list that interest me, and which I am guessing I will read at some point. I generally have little interest in the majority of books on the longlist, though when it is all over I often enjoy the books that win the prize. I am glad I have your reviews to guide me on which books on the list are likely to work for me this year.

That discussion does sound fun, and I will be sorry to miss it. I do plan to read a few of the books, so we can definitely talk about those, but I can't fairly call the race without reading all.
