I think this book shifts around light skin and darker skinned perspectives in a realistic way. I think it also positions the reader to think like the lighter folk at times because we don’t hear the narratives of the slaves and Inèz like that. “Cut out tongues” n all. Ik the rest of the book will be about closure for the enslaved n what not. It really has been making me think about how I feel—color wise.

I knew Agnes was her mom! I fucking knew it! My guess is that Horrine cursed her back and wasn’t thinking about the fact that if she can’t talk she remove the curse. I also feel like maybe they’ve been eating the slaves or something because of them not being able to leave and there being no trace of them

New favorite quote: “the sax low and sultry out of place in broad daylight. That song was for evenings spent in dimly lit rooms before a hand pulled the cord under a tasseled lampshade and caressed a waiting body”

I BET YOU the “one slave we got in our family who won’t a duchon” was probably Jemma’s ancestor!!!! And I bet they ducked off to Chicago and cursed the whole damn family on her way out. I literally BET YOU that’s what this is.

So far, I actually really like it! My ethnicity feels represented in some ways. I can tell this is going to take me some time to finish though. Hard copies always take me longer, but I don’t think I mind so far. I think this is the only book I’ve started recently that I was fairly interested from the first chapter.
