Philip Pullman books are so funny, what do you mean Lyra’s just spent a whole chapter trying to learn how to stew eels while everyone gives her wildly different advice, my girl you are ON THE RUN. LOCK IN.

Janeino ☂️ I would love to hear what you think about this book. I read it earlier this year and felt quite conflicted about it, even though I’m a big fan of Pullman.

my issue is that I would love literally everything about this book if it weren't for the weirdness of the relationship in the fact that Malcom had known Lyra when she was a child. I even think they'd be a good couple if you just looked at both of their personalities and ignored their shared history (hence my comment about shipping them), which is why I'm incredibly conflicted about it.

I haven't read book 3 yet so I don't know how it works out between them, but right now I just mostly feel irritated with Pullman whenever the 'romance' gets mentioned in TSC. I think it was a very strange choice for him to have made that somewhat ruins an otherwise good book, when it would have been so easy for Lyra and Malcolm to have a platonic dynamic more similar to what she had with Lee Scoresby for example. or even just to take out the parts about Malcolm being Lyra's history teacher, which literally do not impact the plot in any way! it all just feels quite unnecessary to me
