She unfolded it until it was just a large, square piece of fabric, then folded the corners and rolled it up, then wrapped it a couple of times around her neck, finishing it with a knot. It was wrapped more tightly around her neck this time. I wondered if it constricted her breathing. No, probably not. It would need to be much tighter to affect her breathing. I wondered how much tighter.

Now it wasn't just the most extreme leftists who believed Laura had authored the post; the moderately extreme leftists were also starting to come around.

I took out my phone so I could look down and hide my face. Of course, this initiated a domino effect. It was an unspoken rule: it's rude to look at your phone when you're hanging out with your friends, but it's not rude if someone else does it first. They didn't want the items on your resume to appear like they had come effortlessly, but they weren't supposed to be too effortful either. If genuine passion made you interesting, then it was desperation that made you boring.

I wondered what it was like to love a discipline as a first principle. Even my love of Harvard Law was predicated on external reasons: to prove to my dad that I had accomplished everything he had dreamed for me, and to prove to everyone from my high school that I had made it further than they ever could. Absent Harvard's status, I couldn't have cared less about the school.
