I was expecting this epic to be hard to read. Once I got past the introduction, it’s not. I have an idea of the plot, and get to really read it without confusion over the double and triple names for the same being. Books like these make me realize people used to just assign gods to everything that had no explanation.

“He is godlike, both greater and lesser than a man”. What a fucking bar. Immortal gods are lesser than men in the sense that they have no stakes. We only have one, final life, that is our eternity. The gods have endless time. The human spirit cannot be matched

The introduction to this is beefy. It takes some easing in, but it’s worth the time to set the table. Knox takes a comprehensive approach to putting these stories in perspective. Identifying who Homer was and when he lived are critical to understanding his tendencies, and it shows how human virtues are unchanged thousands of years later
