I find the preciousness with which (presumably) not artists write about making art, painting in this case, to be frustrating and twee. In this book I try to forgive it, especially as it is in service of gay sex at one point. Truly I hated the beginning as Jane Eyre is the only person I can tolerate addressing the reader, but since then I have enjoyed the mystery and vaguely gothic vibes.
