I want to highlight a concept I have never thought or heard of before in book 3: “But Thou avengest that which men perpetrate against themselves, seeing also that they sin against Thee, they do wickedly against their own souls”. Wow.

One part that was so interesting is a thought Ive had myself! He notes in theatres humans are in the bizarre position of actively desiring sorrow, even though sorrow itself is an inherently negative emotion. I too loved love stories where one of the two died - in order for it to “hurt good”. He argues how fictional suffering is to enjoy compassion without real world responsibility and to fill voids in our hearts

I love how life never really changes and some things will always be the same, like how embarrassing it is to be innocent and pure in your teenage years with friends, wanting to fit in. This chapter wasn’t just of his lust but the desire to fit in. He really tickled my brain showing how everything one does, wrong or neutral, is a misplaced desire that could be fulfilled in God, like stealing, curiosity, or ambition.

His thoughts are so deep, he reminds me of how I try to remember my first memories, and contemplate how infancy works, and try to figure out how God and I are connected. Touched by the way he ponders Gods mercy, his talents and all vanity. His thoughts on learning, loved it. But every word is laced with gratitude, desire, and wonder of God. This first book sits well with me 💕
